First Kiln Firing

Today I got my first experimental samples out of a bisque firing. The results are listed below with captions explaining the making process and materials used. I was surprised to find that the addition of cement to the clay mixture to buff clay did not have any detrimental effect on the extruded pieces post firing. My experience in the ceramics industry of lime inclusion in clay usually gave rise to 'blowing' or the clay surface when the lime rehydrates. Overall I was pleased with the results, it enabled me to familiarise myself with the behaviour of the material after not working with clay for over 20 years. I enjoyed the results of spontaneous making, the tears on the extruded and sledged pieces, the cracking left of the waste disc left in the extruder and the hollowing of the form crated by dipping a scouring pad into porcelain slip.
